On Sunday, 8thSeptember, 2019, South Oxon Archery Club gathered for its annual Championship and barbecue. The weather was gorgeous, with just a hint of autumn in the air and the grounds of Reading Abbey Rugby Club, where we shoot, were at their lovely best. Sadly, the kestrels, which had raised a clutch of young virtually on our shooting line this year, did not put in an appearance – but you can’t have everything.
National, Short National and Junior National rounds were shot, and Barebow and recurve archers of varying levels of experience attended.
The Gents’ Trophy was retained for a further year by Chris Pollard, who says he has a soft spot for this particular trophy as it was first awarded in the year he was born. The Ladies’ Trophy went to Melanie Dalpra, who also got the female “closest to the centre of the gold award” based on the final end at the longer of the two distances shot by competitors. The male “closest to the centre” went to Graham Manning. The Couple’s Trophy this year went to Lynne and Keith Appleby. Another interesting trophy, this was first awarded in 1951, reflecting the long history of the club.
Once everything was cleared away, we celebrated another great year of archery with a barbecue and social. Thanks go to Lisa Jones for catering and to Michael King for his sterling work at the grill.
With the nights drawing in and the clocks due to change in the not too distant future, we are now looking forward to frostbites and to indoor shooting – maybe with a repetition of our “can you take the biscuit” competition, shot at the end of the last indoor season. It amazed all of us how some biscuits could evade arrows and resist shattering in a way which produced more than a little banter.
